Disaster Response and Management
UNDP has been actively supporting the efforts of the Government to reduce the adverse impacts of hazards with specific targets of (a) integrating disaster risk reduction into sustainable development policies and plans; (b) strengthening institutional capacities and mechanisms to build resilience to hazards and (c) incorporating systematic risk reduction approaches into the implementation of emergency preparedness, response and recovery programmes. In collaboration with the Government and like-minded donors, UNDP has created two large programme portfolios – Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP) and Humanitarian Response Team. |

Thousands of flood resistant homes built
Following the devastating flood of 2004, UNDP worked with local architects to develop designs for more flood resistant homes. Since then, 16,000 new ‘model’ homes have been built in some of the worst affected communities throughout Bangladesh. The new homes have stronger cement bases that replace the traditional earth plinths, which often crumble in heavy floods. Among other innovations, the new homes are also fitted with simple rainwater gutters that allow the household to collect clean rainwater during times of crisis and as an alternative source of arsenic-free water. |
