UN extends support to 14,000 Aila-hit families

The United Nations (UN) System has extended its support to 14,000 cyclone Aila affected families still living on embankments in Bangladesh. Drawing assistance from the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), the UN agencies will work to distribute food, assist with shelter and implement basic Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and nutrition interventions.

The draft proposal on “Strategic Priorities of Digital Bangladesh: Information and Communication Technology in Education” has recommended establishment of multimedia classrooms in all secondary schools aimed at making the learning more effective.

Planning Minister Air Vice Marshal (Retd) AK Khandaker underscored the need for implementing e-Governance in strengthening planning, monitoring and evaluation of government's development activities by empowering field level administration in policy decisions.

CHTDF celebrates Int’l Indigenous People’s Day

CHTDF celebrated the “International Day of the World’s Indigenous People” on Monday, 9 August with a call to ensure human rights for the indigenous people. The three-day long celebration kicked off on Sunday, 8 August with a Photo and Painting exhibition titled “Exhibition on Life and Culture of Indigenous Peoples in Bangladesh” at Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka.

PRP to set up 2nd Victim Support Centre in Rangamati soon

The Police Reform Programme (PRP) is going to set up its second Victim Support Centre/Women and Children Support Centre in Rangamati soon. The PRP, as part of its plan to set up 8 Victim Support Centres (VSC) across the country to encourage victims to report crime to police in a safe and secure environment, took the decision.

Village Courts workshop held in Faridpur

The Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh project organised a upazila level workshop on Monday, 23 August at Nagarkanda Upazila under Faridpur district. As a part of continuous effort to create awareness on VCs among the stakeholders, the project orgainsed the workshop aimed at involving the field level high and mid level officials, UP chairmen and VC officials with the project implementation process through sensitizing them about potential in activating the village courts.

Village Courts workshop held in Muolvibazar

Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh Project organised a workshop with Judicial Officers on the Potential and Reforms of Village Court on Saturday, 21 August in Moulvibazar district aimed at facilitating the legal review process, social barriers and limitations on Village Court and developing the reference guide book for VCs alongwith having valuable opinions of the judicial officers and other stakeholders.

Consultative workshop on Nat’l Circumstances of Bangladesh held

Second National Communication (SNC) Project and Department of Environment jointly organised a consultative workshop on “National Circumstances of Bangladesh” held at Paribesh Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka on Tuesday, 17 August. The workshop aimed at sharing and developing National Circumstances Chapter as a part of the preparation of the Second National Communication of the Bangladesh to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Workshop on Crime Scene Photography held

A three-day workshop on “Crime Scene Photography” was held at BIAM auditorium in Dhaka from Tuesday, 10 August to Thursday, 12 August. UNDP-supported Police Reform Programme (PRP) organised the workshop aimed at enhancing the capacity of crime scene photographers of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Forensic Lab.
