UNDP Bangladesh brought together over 20 experts from across academia, civil society, donors, and Government to discuss experiences and share ideas and lessons on the development of integrated, comprehensive and sustainable disaster resilient habitats. Vice-Chancellor of BRAC University Professor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, who chaired the meeting, said the solution for cyclone and storm surge vulnerable communities along the coastal belt “is not to ask people to evacuate, but rather to have a decentralised family-oriented solution”. Dr. Aminul Islam, UNDP Assistant Country Director (Disaster Management) highlighted that as “communities in Bangladesh are facing more frequent and powerful disasters, the concept of an isolated cyclone shelter is no longer appropriate for the challenges faced”. He further stated that “with current climate change predictions, the situation will only deteriorate further”. UNDP committed to continue to work and engage with the group of experts as further research and development is undertaken in the planning of UNDP-supported pilot initiatives with cyclone and storm surged affected and vulnerable communities in south-western Bangladesh.
