About This Project

The Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) is home to 11 distinctive indigenous groups and Bengalis. 25 years of protracted conflict have left many of its 1.5 million inhabitants in conditions of extreme poverty and tensions over the delegation of authority to local government bodies, land tenure, resource access, and ethno-demographics remain challenges to sustainable development. Three quarters of the population live below the national poverty line; 50% of primary-enrolled children drop out in their first few years; and it is estimated that 40% of the CHTs' workforce is either unemployed or underemployed. In partnership with the Government, CHT communities, and NGOs, UNDP is supporting the Promotion of Development and Confidence Building in the Chittagong Hill Tracts project, known as the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Facility (or CHTDF). The project is multi-sectoral and works for the overall development of all peoples in the CHT. The project supports the Government of Bangladesh, institutions of the CHT, and local communities to pursue accelerated, sustainable socio-economic development and poverty reduction based on principles of local participation, and decentralized development.
