UNV Programme in Bangladesh

The United Nations Volunteers is the United  Nations organization that supports sustainable  human development globally through the  promotion of volunteerism, including the  mobilization of volunteers. It serves the causes of peace and development through enhancing opportunities for participation by all peoples. It is universal, inclusive and embraces volunteer action in all its diversity. It values free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity, which are the foundations of volunteerism.

"At the heart of volunteerism are the ideals of service solidarity and the belief that together we can make the world a better place. In that sense, we can say that volunteerism is the ultimate expression of what the United Nations is all about".

Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General (from January 1, 1997 to January 1, 2007)

"Voluntary action takes place whether or not we take notice. It often happens without official sanction or support. But the fact that good deeds grow in the wild does not free us from the obligation to cultivate them".

Sharon Capeling-Alakija, former UNV Executive Coordinator (passed away on4 November 2003)

"The Millennium Development Goals are owned by the people. The role of volunteers as MDG campaigners is essential in connecting the global community and its people around the goals"

Eveline Herfkens, UN Secretary-General's Executive Coordinator for the MDG Campaign

UNV Specialist in Bangladesh

Currently 43 National and International United Nations Volunteers are serving in urban and rural areas of Bangladesh.

International volunteers are coming from Australia, Holland, India, Pakistan and Switzerland and are hosted by UNDP, UNHCR, UNODC, Ministry of Environment and WFP.

The range of expertise of all these professionals varies from health to environment and from public administration to information communication and technology .
Altogether national and international United Nations Volunteer Specialists are contributing considerably to promotion of human development, developing alternative strategies to alleviate poverty, protection of human rights and good governance. All these objectives are consistent with Bangladesh's country development framework and the targets outlined in the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted in 2000.
